NJ Core Curriculum Content Standards for World Language:
7.1.1: (Communication) All students will be able to communicate in at least one world language in addition to English. They will use language to engage in conversation, understand and interpret spoken and written language, present information, concepts and ideas while making connections with other disciplines, and compare the language/culture studied with their own.
7.2.1: (Culture) All students will demonstrate an understanding of the perspectives of a culture(s) through experiences with its products and practices.

Unit description: Chapter 3 presents vocabulary common to school life and after-school activities. It relies on students understanding of the verbs ser and tener as it introduces the verbs Ir, Dar, Estar and the rules for conjugating AR verbs.

Lesson objectives: Students will interpret from context the verb Ir and limited vocabulary of where they can go after school.

Materials: Smart Board file with questions and material

Warm up: Students will copy and give the opposite of the following known vocabulary words: Nota Buena, Facil, ambicioso, serio and interesante

Activate Prior Knowledge:
“When you are looking at a verb in Spanish and you notice it has an N at the end, what does it mean to you”
Show the question on the Smart Boar with a timer. Give students one minute to ponder and respond. Take responses and review.

Present new information: Model of activity
Direct students to look at page 96 of the text. Ask them to find the verb in each of the sentences for the first picture.
With the picture on the Smart Board, point to it and ask, “Que significa VAN?” Write Van and the English meaning on the board when it is inferred. Show a picture of a house and a school. Demonstrate the sentences: Van en bus escolar, Regresan a casa. Use the bus to move from house to school as you do this.

Write the verbs REGRESAN and VAN and the meaning THEY RETURN AND THEY GO on the Smart Board.

Individual research and learning options:
Students will be asked to read and assimilate the information on page 96. Students will have the following options to accomplish this:
1) Traditional: To use the book, read the picture captions and the dictionary at the back of the book to translate the captions. Product will be a piece of paper with English translations of the Spanish captions.

2) Audio/Visual approach: Students will access the page in the book on line. They will listen to the captions of the pictures and use the online vocabulary list translate the captions. Product will be an online word document with the translations.

3) Audio only: Students will download the vocabulary list to their MP3 players and listen to the words. They will practice the pronunciation of the words and find out the definitions of the new words on the page. Product: Students will use a tape recorder to record their voices saying the words in Spanish with the English meanings.

Wrap up:
Students from each of the 3 options will be invited to share their products with the whole class.
